we're back into the upper 60s by 6 p.m. tonight. right now let's check in this is a serious accident we're tracking many accidents this morning or a few any ways. this serious accident is on i-40 eastbound and it is closed right now at airport boulevard. here's some alternate routes for you i-540 eastbound to aviation parkway and back to i-40 eastbound will get you through the airport and around this accident. if you'd like to go another way nc 540 to highway 64 eastbound then to highway 1 northbound. and what we're seeing live out on the scene is a lot of emergency crews responding to this accident. this is on i-40 eastbound near aviation parkway where the road is closed so i'm expecting major backups until this accident is cleared. i'm going to send it over. >> thanks. all right breaking news
the highway patrol is investigating a crash involving a lee county deputy and an atv. >> emma, what are you finding out? >> well, we know this accident happened between a lee county sheriffs deputy and an atv. right now the road where this happened is closed. we're pretty close to the road. you can see the lee county sheriffs deputy car on the side of the road it looks like a serious crash. you can see the air bag deployed and the front of the car has some serious damage. the driver's side door is opened. on the other side of the road we're seeing that atv. for a while it was pushed up against a group of mailboxes there. we've seen highway patrol out there here. they're looking at the atv right now. we saw them pull it away from
they're doing some sort of investigation. we know they've had this road closed since 1 o'clock this morning. we just saw some fire trucks and emergency vehicles pull away from the scene but highway patrol still out here and still investigating. we're still looking for information about who was involved in this crash. highway patrol says this still is very much an active investigation. we will of course continue to be out here and will bring you more information as we get it. for now reporting live in sanford i'm emma wright cbs north carolina. breaking overnight in texas police shot and killed two suspected robbers and injured two others outside of a furniture store. investigators say five people were robbing the store last night when the suspects pointed their weapons at officers and there was a gun battle. two suspects were arrested. no officers were hurt. and this morning hundreds of rescued animals will be ready to find new homes.
brought back to health after a raid. the nearly 700 animals were rescued from a place called the haven which self described animal rescue but the aspca says instead of helping they were actually hurting the 1,000 animals on the property. >> many of them were in poor condition, hungry and dehydrated. the aspca says all of the animals have been well cared for since they were rescued and hope that they can find new homes. >> we're just really excited to be able to get them out of that situation and get them here into the shelter. >> the adoptions start today at 10 in the morning. the owners facing several charges including animal cruelty. right now the faa is investigating after a flight from rdu had to make an emergency landing in new york. the flight was headed to new
turbulence and was struck by lightning. it landed safely at jfk. earlier this morning we heard from passengers who described the really frightening experience. >> like out of nowhere. >> it was a flash of light and a big explosion, the plane dipped about 100 feet, i don't know, it just felt like i was on a roller coaster. >> my last meal was going to be the bag of peanuts and the cup of water i got on the flight. i'm glad we made it safe. >> they can laugh about it now. thankfully nobody was hurt. today a murder suspect is expected in a wake county courtroom. raleigh police arrested ragland. he and a teenager shot and killed diaz and rodriguez. now, the teenaged suspect is still on the run of he's considered armed and dangerous. call police if you
a week after a man and woman were found dead in a home in johnston county authorities announce an arrest. gerald paul junior erwin win. now, authorities say jones and jessica pyatt were shot to death inside a home. her mother says her daughter was friends with both of those arrested. >> it's always worse when you think that you can trust somebody and it being the person thaw love, it's a friend and trust and then they he do something horrible. >> why would you do this to someone? how could you do this to someone? what was your reasoning? and we just -- we don't know why. >> paul is already being held at the harnett county jail at the time of his arrest accused of possessing meth.
american men more likely to be pulled over by police in durham. police department asked for the study to be done to try to find a bias is a factor in traffic stops in particular the researchers found this issue was most pronounced when it comes to the high enforcement abatement team. they focus on issues like drugs and gang violence. they looked at traffic stops in the evening and then compared the results between when it was still light out and when it was dark. they found african american men were 20% more likely to be pulled over during daylight hours when an officer can see the race of the driver. >> i want to say we heard you. we may have thought we did not but we did and the request for this report is evidence of that. >> okay so researchers did not find any evidence of racial bias among female drivers and looked at data from other cities and

and say he was looking around at the ward memorial church which is here they say that's when an atv driver was riding down the center lane kind of riding the double yellow lines right there and they ended up crashing head on. the highway patrol tells us that the name of the drivers is shelton mcclane. they say this is still under investigation. they say the deputy was taken to the hospital in sanford and the driver of the atv he they say when he hit head on with the deputy he was ejected from the atv and ended up off the side on the shoulder of the road. they say they're investigating the atv. they say he took the headlights from the atv with him. they're going to investigate make sure that they were working properly trying to figure out how these two ended up crashing on here head on on
they say this is very much still an active investigation. we are going to continue to follow this story of course and we will bring you more updates later on in the show as we get them. right now former subway spokesman jared fogle is at the center of another court battle. >> a federal lawsuit was filled by a plaintiff identified as jane doe, now, she's a minor who wants $300,000 for personal injuries and emotional distress. now, in addition to foe angle a married couple also named in that lawsuit. the head of his charity and says he used hidden cameras in his home to secretly film minors and shared those pictures with him. right now baltimore ravens

around 64 degrees. so well above that mark and if you are keeping track today will be the 12th day in a row with temperatures above normal. that changes over the weekend. so make sure you're soaking it all in today. cloudy skies as we start right now but you can see the back edge of the system which means the clouds going to break up. so that's what our future forecast shows for today. we'll kind of breeze right through it. the biggest changes overnight tonight into tomorrow morning. clouds spill into central north carolina. for the most part we're going to be dry for the start of our saturday. we could see a shower or two. better chances going to develop as we head throughout the day. so scattered chances possible as we head throughout noon. if you have something that you need to get down outdoors on saturday do it as early as possible. now,

the accident that was out there on i-40 eastbound has been moved to the shoulder and it looks like traffic in both directions is getting by at this point in time. so you don't have to worry by the alternate routes. good news to report before a lot of you hit the road. on neighboring airport boulevard we do have an accident this morning that accident at garden square lane. so if you're heading in this direction stay alert. also stay alert as you are traveling on i-40 eastbound that accident is just on the shoulder.
